Just like board games, one of the most appealing features of tabletop gaming is the tactile aspect of players being able to interact with maps, figures, dice and props to visualize their adventure.
One of the great things about the internet is there are literally thousands of makers of maps available. When game maps are drawn at a scale large enough to apply a 1 inch grid on them to use with miniature figurines of characters and monsters they are called Battle Maps (alluding back to D&D's historical start in miniature warfare games).
2-Minute Tabletop maps
One of my favorite battle map makers is 2-minute Tabletop. Ross McConnell's hand drawn cartoon-style captures the B/X edition visual appeal without the cold, clinical cartography that many battle maps created with Computer Aided Design (CAD) programs seem to have. Fantasy maps are supposed to be fun and exciting.
Ross's maps, like most mappers today, are available on Patreon - where he offers some for free, and others to his paid subscribers.
I love the flexibility these maps offer. His 300 dpi maps look fantastic when they are printed out on poster paper, but are just as good in multiple A4/letter sized pages taped together. Folks on a budget can print them out in black and white on their home printer.
Virtual Table Top (VTT)
Right now during the Covid19 pandemic, folks can use his large 72 or 96 dpi jpgs in Virtual Table Top (VTT) software such as Role20 or FantasyGrounds. He also released most of his map elements as asset packs for a map-drafting product called Dungeondraft so his subscribers can create their own maps with his assets to keep that hand-drawn style.
They also have a free Token Editor with many customizable character and monster tokens that are designed for VTT play (to replace the tabletop miniatures).
Everything pack or Patreon subscription
Check out his free maps, but if you see yourself using quite a few of his maps it is likely worth it for you to either buy his 'Everything Pack' which has the majority of all his maps in one giant bundle and become a monthly subscriber on Patreon to receive additional maps and goodies exclusive to subscribers.
